Instagram Reels ads: size and safe zones
The 9:16 specs, safe zones in pixels, what to avoid and a free checker for your own Reels video.
Facebook & Instagram ads · Instagram
Instagram Story ads are full-screen 9:16 ads that show between people’s Stories, and Malta Digital builds them at 1440 × 2560 pixels with key text kept out of the top 14% and bottom 35%. Below are the specs, a 3-frame plan and a free checker for your own file.

Instagram Story ads are full-screen vertical ads shown between Stories. Use 9:16 at 1440 × 2560 px (1080 × 1920 also works), keep text out of the top 14%, bottom 35% and 6% each side, and say one thing per frame. Malta Digital sets them up as part of our Instagram ads in Malta service.
The short answer
Stories are the short, full-screen posts at the top of Instagram. They play one after another, and people tap to skip. A Story ad is a paid post that appears between them. It fills the whole phone screen, carries a “Sponsored” label and has a button or sticker that takes people to your page, form or shop.
You do not need followers for a Story ad to work. Meta shows it to the people you choose, such as adults in Malta and Gozo, people who visited your website, or tourists who are in Malta right now. You run it from Ads Manager, the same place as your Facebook ads.
This guide covers the specs, the safe zones, a simple 3-frame plan, the setup steps and a free checker. For the wider picture, see our Instagram ads service in Malta, and for Reels read Instagram Reels ads.
Specs
All numbers below come from Meta’s own ads guide for Instagram Stories, checked on 4 November 2026 (Meta Ads Guide: Instagram Stories image specs; video specs).
| Item | Image ad | Video ad |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | 9:16 (1% tolerance) | 9:16 |
| Best size | 1440 × 2560 px | 1440 × 2560 px or 1080 × 1920 px |
| Smallest width | 500 px | 500 px |
| File type | JPG or PNG | MP4, MOV or GIF |
| Largest file | 30 MB | Check Ads Manager for your file |
| How long it shows | 5 to 16 seconds, or until people swipe | Under 16 seconds plays in full; 16 seconds or more may be split into up to 3 cards |
| Primary text | Up to 125 characters recommended | Up to 125 characters recommended |
Pixels are the tiny dots that make up an image. 1440 × 2560 means 1440 dots wide and 2560 tall. Bigger is sharper, but only up to the limit. A 9:16 shape means the height is 16 parts for every 9 parts of width, which is the shape of a phone held upright.
Safe zones
Instagram puts things on top of your Story ad. Your profile name and the “Sponsored” label sit at the top. The call-to-action button or sticker sits at the bottom. If your price or offer sits there, people never see it.
Meta advises leaving about 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% of each side free of text, logos and key details (Meta Ads Guide). Meta’s help page on Stories ads also says the call-to-action sticker sits at the bottom of the ad by default (Meta Business Help: Create Instagram Stories ads).
| Size | Keep top clear | Keep bottom clear | Keep each side clear | Safe area left |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1440 × 2560 | 358 px | 896 px | 86 px | 1268 × 1306 px |
| 1080 × 1920 | 269 px | 672 px | 65 px | 950 × 979 px |

The safe area is smaller than most people expect. It is roughly the middle half of the screen. Put your headline, offer and logo there. Use the top and bottom for background only, such as the sea, a plate of food or a clean colour.
Ad types
Story ads come in three types. Each one plays for a different time, and that changes how you plan it. The diagram shows the rules from Meta’s Ads Guide, opened today.

| Rule | Carousel in Stories |
|---|---|
| Cards | 2 to 10 images or videos, each with its own link |
| Size | 9:16, at least 1080 × 1920 px |
| Video card length | 1 to 15 seconds |
| Shown first | 1 to 3 cards automatically, then people tap “Expand Story” |
| Fixed number of cards | Only if Instagram Stories is the only placement |
| Text | Primary text 125 characters, headline 40 characters, link required |
| File size | Images up to 30 MB, videos up to 4 GB |
Source: Meta Ads Guide: Carousel ads on Instagram Stories. The safe zones are the same as for single ads: 14% top, 35% bottom and 6% each side.
Here is what that means in practice. Put your best card first, because many people will only ever see cards 1 to 3. If you need an exact number of cards to show, run the ad on Stories only.
Checker
Pick a file below. The checker tells you if the shape is 9:16, if the size is big enough, how long a video runs and how Meta may split it. It also shades the safe zones over your file, so you can see if any text falls in them.
Pick one image or video, or up to 10 carousel cards. The checker reads size, ratio and length against Meta’s rules for each ad type, and draws the safe zones on top. Files never leave your device.

A simple plan
Story ads are fast. People decide in a second or two whether to keep watching. So plan each frame to do one job. Here is the plan we use, shown for a made-up restaurant in Marsaxlokk. It is an example, not a client.
| Frame | Job | What it shows | Words on screen |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (0–3 s) | Stop the thumb | Close-up of the fresh fish platter, moving | “Sunday lunch by the boats” |
| 2 (3–8 s) | Give the reason | The terrace, the sea, a table for four | “Set menu, 3 courses” |
| 3 (8–15 s) | Ask for the action | The menu card and the booking button | “Book your table today” |
Keep the whole video under 16 seconds. Meta plays Story videos under 16 seconds in full. Longer ones may be cut into separate cards, and people can swipe away between them. Add captions, because many people watch with the sound off. Use one call to action across all three frames, such as “Book now” or “Get quote”.
For a service business, the same plan works. A cleaning company in Birkirkara might show a messy kitchen, then the clean result, then “Free quote in 1 minute” with a lead form. A tour boat in Gozo might show the Blue Lagoon, the boat, then “Book for tomorrow”.
Apply now and tell us what you sell and who buys it. We’ll suggest a 3-frame plan and tell you honestly if Stories suit your goal.
Worked example
This is a made-up example. A boutique hotel in Valletta has a 1080 × 1350 feed photo with “Winter offer, 2 nights” at the bottom. It wants to use it as a Story ad.
Step one: the checker flags the shape. 1080 × 1350 is 4:5, not 9:16. Meta may add bars or crop it. So the hotel extends the photo to 1080 × 1920, adding 570 px of sky and street.
Step two: the checker shades the safe zones. On 1080 × 1920 the bottom 672 px are covered by the reply bar and the button. The offer line sat at about 1,500 px from the top, inside that zone. So it moves up to about 900 px, in the safe middle.
Step three: the text. The primary text read “Escape to the heart of Valletta this winter with our special two night offer, breakfast included and late check out.” That is 116 characters, under the 125 guide. The hotel keeps it, and adds a 3-card carousel with the room, the breakfast and the terrace view, each 1080 × 1920.
Without the fix, the one thing that sells, the offer, would have sat behind the button.

Story vs Reels vs feed
| Stories | Reels | Feed | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shape | 9:16, full screen | 9:16, full screen | 4:5 or 1:1 works best |
| How people use it | Tap through fast | Scroll and watch | Scroll and read |
| Good for | Short offers, dates, “book today” | Showing the product in action | Detail, carousels of products |
| Text space | Middle half only | Middle area, keep bottom clear | Most of the image |
| Sound | Often off | Often on | Often off |
You do not have to choose just one. With Advantage+ placements, which is Meta’s automatic setting, one campaign can run in all three. Meta then shows more of the placement that gets results more cheaply. What matters is giving it a proper 9:16 version, so the Story does not look like a squashed feed post.
For a time-limited offer, such as a weekend menu or a Black Friday sale, Stories are a strong choice. For showing how something works, Reels often do better. Our guide on how to advertise on Instagram covers the first steps.
Setup
You can also boost a Story straight from the Instagram app. That is quicker, but you get fewer choices. Instagram says you can only boost Stories that are active, in your highlights or reposted from your archive, and only with some stickers, such as location, mention or countdown (Instagram Help: Boost an Instagram story). Polls and music, for example, block a boost.
Proof
From 1 January to 13 October 2025, Meta campaigns run by Malta Digital spent €44,885.36 on Facebook and Instagram. Ads Manager tracked 9,384 website purchases worth €217,048.38. That is an average ROAS of 4.84. ROAS means return on ad spend: tracked sales divided by what the ads cost.
These results came from all placements together, Stories included. It was not a Stories-only test. The habit behind it is simple. Every few weeks we made new 9:16 versions of the best ads, so a small market did not keep seeing the same frame.

Mistakes
Using a feed image. A 1:1 square in a 9:16 space looks cheap and leaves empty bars. Make a real vertical version.
Text in the danger zones. A price at the very bottom sits under the button. Use the checker above before you upload.
Too many words. People get a few seconds. One short line per frame is enough.
A slow start. If the first second is a logo on a white screen, people tap past. Lead with the product or the result.
No captions. Many watch with the sound off. Put the key words on screen.
Running one ad for months. In Malta the same people see it quickly. Plan a fresh version every 3 to 4 weeks. Our guide to ad creative that works has ideas.
Decide

Stories are not only for young people in Malta. In 2025, 98.0% of people aged 16 to 24 used social networks, 88.2% of those aged 25 to 54, and 61.3% of those aged 55 to 74 (Eurostat, dataset isoc_ci_ac_i, 2025, opened 4 Nov 2026).

What this means. Selling to over-55s? Keep Stories simple: big text, one offer, a clear button. Selling to under-25s? Use video and change the ad every two to three weeks.

Neither is always better. Stories suit short, time-limited offers. Reels suit showing a product in action. Most campaigns run both.
