Hotel direct bookings
How to win more stays on your own site and cut OTA commission.
Websites · Hotels & guesthouses
A hotel or guesthouse site should show rooms clearly and finish the booking on your domain. This guide covers the pages, features and a labelled OTA example for Malta properties, with figures checked on 5 November 2026.

A hotel or guesthouse website in Malta should do one job well: help a guest decide and book without leaving for an OTA. That means clear rooms, real photos, a short book-direct path on mobile, and the basics guests search for (map, rules, languages). At Malta Digital, websites start from €990, €2,490 and €4,900. For the booking strategy, see our hotel direct bookings guide and our web design in Malta service.
Why it matters
Malta welcomed 4,022,310 inbound tourists in 2025, up 12.9% on 2024, and 25.4 million guest nights (+11.0%). Collective accommodation still takes about half of those nights. Figures from the Malta Tourism Observatory local tourism performance report (Jan–Dec 2025), aligned with NSO releases and the Malta Tourism Authority summary. Checked 5 November 2026.
Guests compare stays on a phone long before they arrive. If your site is slow, vague about rooms, or sends people to an OTA to finish, you lose the booking and the commission. A hotel website is not a brochure. It is the path from “looks nice” to “booked with you”.
This page covers the website: pages, features and design for hotels and guesthouses in Malta and Gozo. It does not replace our direct bookings guide, which focuses on commissions and how to win the stay. Use both.
Feature picker
Not every guesthouse needs a full booking engine on day one. Some need a clear enquiry site first. Others need dates, deposits and extras. Use the picker, then compare it with quotes.
Pick a level. You get a planning feature list and our published starting prices. Worked out on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Custom booking rules, deposits and calendar links sit with our booking system in Malta service, from €7,500 for a focused custom system.
Booking path
Walk the path yourself on a phone. If any step is unclear, guests bounce to an OTA that already works.

| Step | Guest question | Page must show |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Homepage | What kind of stay is this? | One clear offer, location, Book now |
| 2. Rooms | Where will I sleep? | Photos, beds, amenities, rates or seasons |
| 3. Dates | Can I stay when I want? | Availability tool or short enquiry form |
| 4. Confirm | How do I finish? | Pay or request, email confirmation |
| 5. After | How do I get there? | Map, house rules, check-in times |
Keep Book now visible on mobile. Guests should not hunt for a phone number buried in a footer. Form and email are the contact paths we use on malta-digital.com; on a hotel site, the guest path is book or enquire.
Worked example
Here is a labelled example, not a client result. An 8-room guesthouse moves 120 nights a year through OTAs at €120 a night with a 15% commission. That is €14,400 of room sales and about €2,160 left with the OTA. The same nights on your own site keep that fee, before card fees and costs.

Type nights, average rate and commission %. Or press “Fill in the worked example”. This is an example from your inputs, not a client result.
Moving even part of those nights to your site pays for a better website over time. The strategy detail lives in hotel direct bookings.

Template vs custom
Both can look good. The difference is how far the booking path and rules can go.
| Need | Good template | Custom build |
|---|---|---|
| Brochure + enquire | Usually enough | Only if brand needs a unique layout |
| Your own rates and seasons | Often manual updates | Built into the page or booking tool |
| Direct booking rules | Plugin limits | Deposits, extras, allotments as agreed |
| Languages | Theme dependent | Planned with your guest markets |
| Speed on mobile | Varies with plugins | Designed to stay light |
| Typical Malta Digital start | from €990–€2,490 | Growth from €4,900; systems from €7,500 |
Ask every supplier who owns the site, the domain and the booking data, and what happens if you leave. Write that into the contract.
Features
Use this as a brief. Tick what you need before you compare quotes.
A .mt domain from NIC(Malta) is €20 in year one and €10 a year to renew (NIC(Malta) fees, checked 5 November 2026). Hosting and email are separate.
Proof
We do not invent hotel client results. Here is a real project in another service business: a furniture assembly and installation company needed a website, social presence and ads together. In one month the site and ads work reached 50.3K people and drove measurable engagement. Demos and case studies show design and process; they are not a promise for your property.

For hotels, the same rule applies: the website must be ready before you spend on ads. See also web design in Malta.
A few straight answers
A clear stay offer, room pages with real photos, rates or seasons, a book-direct or enquiry path, map and directions, house rules, and a fast mobile layout. English first, with other guest languages when you need them. Malta Digital websites start from €990, €2,490 and €4,900.
With Malta Digital, focused sites start from €990, Business Websites from €2,490 and Growth Websites from €4,900. Direct booking systems and custom rules are quoted separately, from €7,500 for a focused custom system.
A good template is fine for a simple brochure site. Custom pays off when you need your own booking rules, languages, or connections to calendars and payments. Compare total cost over three years, not only the build price.
Put Book now on every key page, show rooms and rates clearly, keep the path short on a phone, and give guests a reason to skip the OTA (best rate, free breakfast, flexible check-in). See our hotel direct bookings guide for the strategy.
English is enough for many properties. Add Maltese or other languages when your guests search in them. Malta’s top source markets in 2025 included the UK, Italy, Poland, France and Germany (Malta Tourism Authority).
That guide is about the booking strategy and commissions. This page is about the website itself: pages, features, mobile design and what to build. They link to each other and to our web design and booking system services.
