The short answer

What a website costs in Malta.

The price depends on three things: how many pages you need, who writes the words and takes the photos, and what the website has to do. A simple site that shows your services and a contact form sits at the low end. A site that takes bookings, sells products or connects to your other systems sits at the high end.

Here is what Malta web designers publish on their own websites, side by side with our prices. Use it as a map, not a quote. Two websites with the same number of pages can be very different jobs.

What moves the price

Six things that change the price.

Diagram: where a website budget goes, from the build and content to running costs, changes and growth
Where a website budget goes. One-off costs first, then the costs that come back every year.

1. Pages. Each page needs planning, design, words and testing. A plumber in Mosta may need five pages. A clinic with ten treatments may need fifteen. More pages, more work.

2. Words and photos. This is the cost people forget most. If you supply the text and photos, the build is faster and cheaper. If the designer writes the words, that is extra time, and it should be in the quote.

3. Template or custom design. A template is a ready-made layout with your logo and colours. A custom design is planned around your business. Templates are cheaper. Custom design usually looks more like you, and it can be built to load faster.

4. Features. A contact form is simple. Online booking with deposits, a shop with delivery zones, or a members area are each projects of their own.

5. Connections. Linking your website to a CRM, an email tool, a payment gateway or Facebook and Instagram ads tracking takes set-up and testing.

6. Languages. English only is the norm for many Malta businesses. Adding Maltese or Italian means more words to write, check and keep up to date.

Running costs

What you pay every year.

A website is not a one-off bill. Budget for these running costs, and ask every designer to write them down before you start.

Domain name. This is your web address. NIC(Malta), the registry for .mt, publishes fixed fees when you register directly with it. A .mt or .com.mt costs €20 in the first year, which is a €10 set-up charge plus the €10 annual fee. After that it is €10 a year, or €18 for two years. Registrars set their own prices for .mt and .com domains.

NIC(Malta) fees when you register directly, version 4.1 dated 1 August 2025, checked 2 November 2026. NIC shows these fees inclusive of VAT.
DomainFirst year (set-up + fee)Renewal, 1 yearRenewal, 2 years
yourname.mt€20€10€18
yourname.com.mt€20€10€18
yourname.org.mt€15€5€9

Hosting. This is the computer that serves your website to visitors. Prices vary a lot, from builder plans that include hosting to managed hosting for busy shops. Ask what speed, backups and support you get, not just the price.

Business email. An address like info@yourname.mt usually costs a monthly fee for each person who uses it.

Security certificate (SSL). This gives the padlock in the browser. Many hosts include it for free. If yours does not, ask why.

Updates and changes. New prices, a new service, a new team photo. Agree up front how changes are charged: per job, per hour or in a monthly plan.

Hidden costs

Ten things quotes often leave out.

Two quotes can look very different only because one leaves things out. Before you compare prices, check that each quote says yes or no to each of these.

  1. Writing the words for every page.
  2. Photos: stock photos, or a photographer.
  3. Revision rounds: how many, and what counts as one.
  4. Moving your old website, including redirects so you keep your Google rankings.
  5. Privacy policy and cookie notice.
  6. Domain and email set-up, in your name.
  7. Hosting for the first year and after.
  8. Analytics and tracking, so you can see where enquiries come from.
  9. Training to change text and photos yourself.
  10. Price after year one: some plans go up at renewal.

One more check: who owns what. The domain should be registered in your business’s name, and you should get the logins. If you ever move to another designer, you want to take your website and your address with you.

Worked example

A worked example: cheap now, dear later.

These are made-up numbers, to show the maths, not real quotes. Say a café in Sliema gets two quotes for the same five-page website.

Quote A is €600 to build, plus a €45 monthly plan for hosting and changes. Quote B is €1,500 to build, plus €15 a month for hosting.

In year one, Quote A costs €600 + (12 × €45) = €1,140. Quote B costs €1,500 + (12 × €15) = €1,680. Quote A looks €540 cheaper.

Over three years, Quote A costs €600 + (36 × €45) = €2,220. Quote B costs €1,500 + (36 × €15) = €2,040. Now Quote B is €180 cheaper. Add the same .mt domain to both (€20, then €10 a year) and the gap stays the same.

Bar chart of two made-up website quotes: Quote A costs €1,140 in year one and €2,220 over three years; Quote B costs €1,680 in year one and €2,040 over three years
Made-up example. The cheaper quote in year one is the dearer one over three years.

The lesson is simple. Compare the total over the time you expect to keep the website, usually three years or more, not just the build price.

Quote comparer

Compare your own quotes.

Type in the numbers from the quotes in front of you. Leave a box empty if a quote does not charge it. The tool works out the total over one to five years and shows which quote is cheapest over that time.

Website quote comparer

Type the numbers from up to three quotes. The tool adds the build price, extras, monthly and yearly fees, and shows the total over the years you choose. Everything is worked out on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Your comparison

This tool needs JavaScript. The formula is written out below, so you can do the same maths by hand.

The formula, if you prefer a pen: total = build price + one-off extras + (monthly fees × 12 × years) + (yearly fees × years). Use the same number of years for every quote. If one quote shows prices with VAT and another without, put them on the same basis first. Malta’s standard VAT rate is 18%.

Proof

From no website to 395 WhatsApp taps.

A furniture assembly and installation business came to us with no website, a Facebook page with an empty intro and 858 views in the previous 28 days. We built a mobile website made for quote requests, rebuilt their Facebook and Instagram, and ran Meta ads that open a chat or a phone call.

In the first 28 days, €346.75 of ad spend brought 395 WhatsApp taps, 10 phone calls and 1,158 page visits. That is the real test of what a website costs: not the price on the invoice, but what it brings back.

Grants

Can a grant pay for part of it?

Sometimes, and not as cash. Malta Enterprise’s Micro Invest scheme gives a tax credit, not a payment. We checked its summary page on 2 November 2026. It says the credit is up to 65% of eligible costs, or up to 85% for businesses operating from Gozo. The maximum is €65,000 per applicant over three years. Applications open from 1 January 2027.

Our guide to website grants in Malta explains how the Micro Invest guidelines treat website development. One rule catches people out: the agreement that describes the website’s functions must be signed before work starts. Digitalise your SME does not list websites. Malta Enterprise decides who qualifies, so treat this as a guide, not advice.
