Is there a grant
for a website?
Yes, in a way.

Yes, in a way. Malta Enterprise’s Micro Invest scheme names development and customisation of websites among eligible costs, as a tax credit rather than a cash grant. Digitalise your SME does not list websites, and it excludes design and marketing fees. For Micro Invest, sign an agreement that specifies the website’s functionality before work starts.

Malta Digital blog: Is there a grant for a website in Malta?

Last checked

Last checked: 7 October 2026, against Malta Enterprise’s Micro Invest 2026 page and guidelines, and the fondi.eu page for Digitalise your SME. Schemes change. The funding body decides eligibility. This is a plain summary, not advice.

Micro Invest

Micro Invest names
websites as eligible.

Micro Invest 2026–2030 is a tax credit scheme for small undertakings. The guidelines list “development and customisation costs for software systems, websites and digital applications” among eligible costs.

Tax credit rate

Up to 65% of eligible costs, or up to 85% for Gozo.

Who

Undertakings employing 1 to 50 people that are eligible for de minimis aid.

Cap

€65,000 over three years, with an extra €20,000 for Gozo, family businesses, female-owned businesses or social enterprises.

Costs covered

Eligible costs from 1 January 2026. Applications open from 1 January 2027. The scheme runs until 31 December 2030.

The agreement rule

The rule that
catches people out.

For website and software development, the guidelines require an agreement signed before the works start, specifying the functionality. A website built first and documented later may not qualify.

01

Specify first

Write down what the website will do: pages, forms, bookings, integrations.

02

Sign before work

Sign the agreement with the developer before any work begins.

03

Keep invoices

Invoices must be at least €500 excluding VAT. VAT and other taxes are deducted from eligible costs.

04

Claim later

Apply in the application window with the agreement, invoices and proof of payment.

Maintenance and hosting linked to a new solution can also be eligible, according to the guidelines.

What counts

What counts as an
eligible website cost.

Based on the Micro Invest 2026 guidelines when last checked:

Development and customisation

Building or customising a website, software system or digital application, with the agreement signed first.

Maintenance and hosting

Can be eligible when linked to a new solution.

Not eligible

VAT and other taxes, and invoices under €500 excluding VAT.

If you are unsure whether a cost counts, ask Malta Enterprise before you commit to it.

Quick check

Check if you
could qualify.

  • Does your business employ between 1 and 50 people?
  • Is it eligible for de minimis aid, with room under the €300,000 limit over three years?
  • Will the website be new development or customisation, not just a template you edit yourself?
  • Can you sign an agreement specifying the functionality before work starts?
  • Does your business pay tax that a tax credit can reduce?

If you answer no to any of these, check with Malta Enterprise or your adviser before relying on the scheme.

Tax credit

What a tax credit
means in practice.

A tax credit is not cash in your bank account. It reduces the tax your business pays. If your business pays little or no tax, the benefit may come later or be limited. Ask your accountant how it applies to you before you count on it.

Example, not a promise. A €4,900 website (excluding VAT) at a 65% rate would mean up to €3,185 in tax credit, if the cost is approved and the business has tax to set it against. VAT is not an eligible cost.

Micro Invest 2024

Costs from 2025:
Micro Invest 2024.

If your business had eligible costs in 2025, Malta Enterprise accepts late submissions under the previous Micro Invest scheme until 25 November 2026, according to its website when last checked.

Digitalise your SME

Digitalise your SME:
why it differs.

Digitalise your SME funds digital solutions with grants from €25,000 to €120,000, plus a 7% flat rate. Websites are not listed among its examples, and fees for design, marketing and other consultancy work are not eligible.

It suits larger software projects, such as booking systems, CRMs or connected business systems. A website might form part of a wider project, but the funding body decides what is eligible.

Common mistakes

Mistakes that can
cost the credit.

  • Starting the work before the agreement is signed.
  • A vague quote that does not describe the functionality.
  • Invoices under €500 excluding VAT.
  • Counting VAT as part of the eligible cost.
  • Missing proof of payment.
  • Assuming Digitalise your SME will cover a website on its own.

Other schemes

Other schemes
worth knowing.

Marketing Strategy for SMEs

Support of up to €10,000 for a marketing strategy by a registered provider, at 60% for businesses up to 5 years old and 50% for older ones. It funds the strategy, not the website build.

Gozo accommodation marketing

Support from Invest Gozo for a marketing plan by a professional agency, for accommodation businesses in Gozo.

Next steps
