Website Redesign in Malta: Signs, Cost and Keeping Your Rankings | Malta Digital

Website
redesign
in Malta.

A website redesign is worth it when your current site is slow or awkward on phones, hard for you to update, no longer matches what you sell, or simply does not bring enquiries. Done well, it keeps what already works: the pages that rank on Google, the content customers read and the links other sites point to. The safe order for a Malta business is audit first, plan the pages and redirects, build on a test address, then switch over and monitor Search Console. Skip the redirects and a new design can quietly lose the Google traffic the old one earned.

Key takeaways

  • How do I know if my website needs a redesign? If it is slow or awkward on a phone, you cannot update it, it no longer matches your services, or it does not bring enquiries, a redesign is usually worth it.
  • Will a redesign hurt my Google rankings? It can if page addresses change without redirects. Map every old page to its new one with 301 redirects, keep them for at least a year and watch Search Console after launch.
  • How much does a website redesign cost in Malta? It is usually priced like a new site. Our websites start from €990, €2,490 and €4,900, excluding VAT; we quote a redesign after reviewing your current site.

The short answer

Redesign, refresh or rebuild?

Not every tired website needs a full redesign. A refresh changes the look, the photos and the text on the same pages and platform; it suits a site that works but looks dated. A redesign rethinks the structure, the pages and the way people get to an enquiry, and usually means a new build. A rebuild is needed when the platform itself is the problem: an old WordPress theme nobody updates, a site builder you cannot leave, or a developer who has disappeared with the login.

The right choice depends on what is actually wrong. If people find you on Google and the site loads quickly but looks old, a refresh may be enough. If the site is slow, breaks on phones, or no one on your team can change a price without calling someone, a redesign or rebuild will pay for itself in saved time and lost enquiries recovered.

The common mistake is starting with colours and fonts. Start with what the site must do: which customers it serves, what they need to find, and what you want them to do next.

The signs

Signs your website needs a redesign.

The clearest sign is on a phone. Open your site on mobile data the way a customer in Mosta or Victoria would after seeing your Instagram post. If text is tiny, buttons are hard to tap, the menu covers the page or it takes several seconds to show anything, customers leave before they read a word. Google also uses the mobile version of your site for ranking, so a poor mobile site hurts you twice.

The second sign is that the site no longer matches the business. You added services, dropped others, changed prices or opened in Gozo, and the website still describes the business of five years ago. Customers notice, and they message to ask what the website should already answer.

Other signs are practical: you cannot update it yourself, it has no secure https padlock, the contact form sends nowhere, it has no WhatsApp button, or you are embarrassed to send the link. If enquiries come from everywhere except the website, the website is not doing its job.

Keep what works

Start with an audit, not a design.

Example order for a website redesign. Small sites are best switched over all at once.

Before anything is designed, list every page the current site has and what each one does. Search Console shows which pages bring clicks from Google and for which searches; your analytics show which pages people read and where enquiries start. Those pages are assets, even if they look old, and the new site must keep their content and their value.

Look at the content too. A detailed page about your service in Malta, real photos of your work and honest answers to common questions are worth keeping and improving. Thin pages that say little, duplicates and outdated offers can be merged or removed, with their address redirected to the closest new page.

Finally, write down what the new site must do better: more enquiries from a particular service, online booking, prices visible, a Maltese or Italian version, or simply a site you can update yourself. That list becomes the brief, and it is what you judge the redesign against afterwards.

Protect your rankings

Keeping your Google rankings through a redesign.

Google stores its index page by page. If a page’s address changes and nothing tells Google, the old address returns an error and the ranking it earned is lost. The fix is a permanent (301) redirect from every old address to its closest new page, set up on the server before the new site goes live. Google recommends keeping these redirects for as long as possible, generally at least a year.

Map the addresses one by one. Keep the same address where you can, redirect changed ones to the matching new page, and avoid sending everything to the homepage, which Google may treat as a missing page. Then update your own internal links, your sitemap, your Google Business Profile link and the links in your social profiles and ads.

After launch, submit the new sitemap in Search Console and watch the Pages and Performance reports for a few weeks. Some movement is normal while Google reprocesses the site; errors on pages that used to get clicks are not, and should be fixed quickly. Search Console’s Change of Address tool is only needed if you also move to a new domain.

Mobile, speed and access

Mobile, speed and accessibility.

Design for the phone first, then make it look good on a laptop. Most local searches and almost every click from social media happen on a phone, so the first screen on mobile should say what you do, where, and how to contact you, with a WhatsApp or call button within reach of a thumb.

Speed comes mostly from the build, not from hosting. Compressed modern images, few plugins and scripts, and no heavy sliders or autoplay videos make the biggest difference. Google’s Core Web Vitals are a sensible checklist for a redesign: the main content should appear quickly, the page should respond to taps without delay, and nothing should jump while loading.

A redesign is also the cheapest moment to make the site accessible: readable contrast, alt text on images, proper headings, forms with labels and a site that works with a keyboard. The European Accessibility Act has applied since 28 June 2025 to services such as online shops, with an exemption for micro-enterprises; even where it does not apply, an accessible site is easier for every customer to use.

Content that sells

Content and enquiries: what the new site must do.

Three columns: keep pages that rank, real photos and useful answers; fix slow pages, the mobile layout and hidden prices; add WhatsApp, online booking or quote forms and tracking
What to keep, fix and add in a redesign. Summarised from this article.

A good-looking site that does not explain your service clearly still loses enquiries. Each main service deserves its own page that answers what it is, who it is for, roughly what it costs, where you work in Malta and Gozo, and how to book. These pages are also the ones most likely to rank on Google for the searches customers make.

Give people the contact method they prefer. In Malta that usually means a WhatsApp button, a short form, a phone number that can be tapped and, where it fits, online booking or a quote request. Make sure every form actually arrives somewhere a person checks, and test it after launch.

Connect measurement before launch: Google Analytics or a similar tool, Search Console, and the Meta Pixel with cookie consent if you advertise on Facebook or Instagram. Then you can compare the new site with the old one by enquiries, not by opinion.

Cost

What a website redesign costs in Malta.

A redesign is usually priced like a new website, because most of the work is the same: planning the pages, writing and organising content, design, build, redirects and testing. What changes the price is the number of pages, how much content must be rewritten or moved, and features such as booking, a shop, several languages or connections to other systems.

Our websites start from €990, €2,490 and €4,900, excluding VAT, depending on scope, and we quote a redesign after looking at your current site. Online stores and custom systems are scoped separately. Some projects that add real digital functionality may be partly covered by Malta grant schemes; check the rules before you start.

Budget for the time on your side too: approving the page plan, supplying photos and checking prices and details. A redesign moves fastest when one person on your team can make decisions.

How we do it

How we redesign websites.

We begin with an audit of your current site, Search Console and enquiries, and tell you honestly what is worth keeping. Then we agree the page plan, the redirect map and the price in writing, build the new site on a test address while the old one stays live, and switch over with every redirect in place.

After launch we check Search Console, the forms, WhatsApp buttons and tracking, and fix anything that needs attention. Because we also run Facebook and Instagram ads, we build pages that are ready to receive ad traffic from day one. Our web design page and case studies show more of our work.

A few straight answers

What you might be wondering.

How do I know if my website needs a redesign?

If it is slow or awkward on a phone, you cannot update it, it no longer matches your services, or it does not bring enquiries, a redesign is usually worth it.

How long does a website redesign take?

A small site can be ready in a few weeks once content is agreed. Larger sites, shops and booking features take longer.

Can I keep my domain and email?

Yes. A redesign normally keeps the same domain and email. Only a change of domain needs extra steps such as Search Console’s Change of Address tool.

Should I refresh or fully redesign?

Refresh if the site works and ranks but looks dated. Redesign or rebuild if the structure, mobile experience or platform is the problem.
