Websites · Online shop costs
An online shop costs more than its build price. Each month you also pay for the platform, the apps and a fee on every order. This guide adds it all up with fees checked on 4 November 2026, a worked example and a free calculator for your own numbers.

At Malta Digital, we see Malta shop builds priced from about €1,900 for a small shop to €10,000 or more for a large one, based on prices Malta agencies publish. Then come running costs: a platform plan from €29 a month, card fees of about 1.5% to 1.7% plus €0.25 per order, and a .mt domain at €20 in year one. Our online shops are quoted after a short call. See our web design in Malta service.
The short answer
An online shop has two kinds of cost. First, the build: design, products, checkout, delivery rules and payments. You pay it once. Second, the running costs: the platform plan, apps, the domain and a fee on every order. You pay these every month for as long as the shop is open.
On 4 November 2026 we checked the prices Malta agencies publish for online shops. Small shop packages started at about €1,900. Mid-size shops were quoted at about €4,500 to €12,000. Large custom shops went to €30,000. Most of those pages gave a build price only. Few said what the shop costs to run.
That is the gap this guide fills. A shop with 150 orders a month can pay more in card fees in one year than its platform costs in three. So when you compare quotes, compare the total over three years, not just the build. Our website cost guide covers sites without a shop.
Our own prices are simple. Websites start from €990, €2,490 and €4,900. Online shops are quoted after a short call, because the work depends on your products. The €990 website does not include a shop.
Calculator
Use the numbers from your quote and from your platform’s price page. If you do not have them yet, press “Fill in the worked example” to see how it works.
Type the numbers from your quote and your platform’s price page. The tool adds the build, the monthly plans and the fee on every order, then shows the total over the years you choose. Everything is worked out on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere.
One-off and fixed costs
Orders and payment fees
This tool needs JavaScript. The formula is written out below, so you can do the same maths by hand.
The formula, if you want to check it by hand. Fee per order = average order × card fee % + fixed fee. Yearly card fees = fee per order × orders per month × 12. Year one = build + 12 months of plans and apps + domain + yearly card fees. Each later year = the same, without the build.
Running costs
These are the fees we checked today on official price pages. They change, so check them again before you sign. Shopify shows its prices by region, so look in your own account too.
| Cost | What you pay | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify plan | Basic €29 a month, or €22 a month paid yearly. Grow €82 or €62. Advanced €384 or €289. | Shopify pricing |
| Shopify Payments, online cards | Basic 1.7% + €0.25. Grow 1.6% + €0.25. Advanced 1.5% + €0.25. | Shopify pricing |
| Shopify fee for outside payment providers | 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced, on top of the provider’s own fee. | Shopify pricing |
| Stripe card fees | 1.5% + €0.25 for standard EEA cards. 2.8% + €0.25 for premium EEA cards. | Stripe Malta pricing |
| .mt domain | €20 in year one, then €10 a year. NIC says these include 18% VAT. | NIC(Malta) fees |
| Apps and plugins | From free to a few hundred euro a year, depending on what you add. | Your own list |
Two things stand out. Shopify Payments works in Malta, as Malta is on Shopify’s list of supported countries (Shopify Help Center). And if you use another payment provider on Shopify, you pay the provider’s fee and Shopify’s extra fee. On a busy shop, that second fee adds up fast.
WooCommerce works differently. The plugin itself is free, but you pay for hosting, and some plugins cost money each year. You also pay your payment provider, such as Stripe. Someone has to keep it updated, so ask who does that and what it costs.
Worked example
Here is one shop, worked three ways. It is an example, not a price list. Say the shop gets 150 orders a month at €50 each. That is €90,000 of sales a year. The build quote is €3,500 in every case, so only the running costs differ.
| Set-up | Fee per order | Card fees a year | Year one | 3 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Basic + Shopify Payments | €1.10 | €1,980 | €6,208 | €11,604 |
| Shopify Basic + outside provider at 1.5% + €0.25 | €2.00 | €3,600 | €8,028 | €16,464 |
| WooCommerce + Stripe, standard EEA cards | €1.00 | €1,800 | €5,820 | €10,440 |
How we got there. Shopify Basic is €29 a month, so €348 a year. We added €30 a month for apps. The domain is €20, then €10. On WooCommerce we used €25 a month for hosting and €200 a year for plugins, as examples. Card fees use the rates in the table above.

Look at what the chart shows. In year two, card fees are about 73% of the Shopify shop’s running costs. The plan itself is only 13%. So a cheaper plan saves little, while the wrong payment set-up can cost €1,800 a year more. Premium and non-EU cards cost more than standard cards, so your real mix may be higher.

VAT
This is not tax advice. Talk to your accountant before you launch. But here are the basics you should know before you price your products.
Malta’s standard VAT rate is 18%. There are reduced rates of 5% and 7% for some goods and services (Your Europe: VAT rates). Most shoppers want to see the full price, with VAT included, before they pay.
Selling to people in other EU countries changes things. The EU uses a €10,000 yearly threshold for these sales to consumers. Above it, you normally charge the VAT rate of the buyer’s country (Your Europe: cross-border VAT). That can mean many rates on one shop.
You do not need to register in each country. The EU One Stop Shop, or OSS, lets you file one VAT return for all of them. For most shops it is filed every quarter, by the end of the month after the quarter ends (EU One Stop Shop). Your shop should be set up to charge the right rate, so plan this into the build.
The Malta market
Malta businesses sell online more than the EU average. In 2025, 32.9% of Malta firms with 10 or more staff had web sales, against 20.7% across the EU. Most of them sold through their own website or app (Eurostat, isoc_ec_esels).

Shoppers are there too. In 2025, 71.4% of people in Malta bought something online in the past 12 months, close to the EU figure of 73.6% (Eurostat, isoc_ec_ib20). So the buyers exist, but so do many rival shops.
What does that mean for your budget? A shop alone is not enough. Fast pages, a short checkout, clear delivery to Malta and Gozo and good product photos win the sale. Plan some budget for getting people to the shop, not just for building it.
The build price
Two shops can look alike and cost very different amounts. These are the things that change the build price most:
Before you sign, ask each agency the same five questions. Who owns the shop, the domain and the accounts? Which payment provider is set up, and what does it charge? What do the apps or plugins cost each year? Who updates the shop, and for how much? What is not included? Then put the answers into the calculator above.

After launch
A shop only pays back when people buy. For one e-commerce client, our Meta ads brought €573,222.05 in tracked sales on €95,470.88 of ad spend from January to May 2026. That is an average return of 6.00 on the ad spend. Tracked sales are not profit, and results vary by shop.

Results like this need a shop that loads fast and a checkout that works on a phone. That is why we build the shop and the tracking together. You can read more in the case study.
A few straight answers
Malta agencies publish shop builds from about €1,900 for a small shop to €10,000 or more for a large one. Then you pay running costs: a platform plan from €29 a month, card fees of about 1.5% to 1.7% plus €0.25 per order, and a domain. Malta Digital quotes online shops after a short call.
It depends on your orders. In our example of 150 orders a month, WooCommerce with Stripe cost €10,440 over three years and Shopify with Shopify Payments cost €11,604. Using an outside payment provider on Shopify raised it to €16,464.
