Websites · Hosting
Website hosting in Malta is the server that keeps your site online and fast, so customers can send enquiries, book or buy. Malta Digital builds the website and sets hosting as part of our web design in Malta. Hosting is a yearly running cost, separate from the build price in our website cost guide.

Website hosting in Malta is the server that keeps your site online and fast, so customers can send enquiries, book or buy. Malta Digital builds the website and sets hosting so pages stay up, as a yearly running cost separate from the build.
What hosting is

A website only works if people can open it. Hosting is the computer that stores the pages and sends them when someone visits.
The domain is the address they type, such as yourname.mt. SSL is the padlock that turns the address into https. Email is often sold next to hosting, but it is a separate service.
When hosting is slow or down, the contact form, the shop and the booking page fail with it. Ads can keep spending. Search can keep sending people. Nobody can complete the next step.
Example scene A Sliema boutique pays for weekend ads. Saturday afternoon the site times out. A visitor tries to book a fitting, gives up, and writes to a shop that loaded. The ad bill still arrives on Monday.
That is why hosting is a business cost, not a technical extra. It exists so the site can bring enquiries, bookings and sales.
What you pay over three years

The build price is one invoice. Hosting comes back every year. Compare three years, not the first month alone.
Hosting prices published on Malta pages we opened on 8 November 2026 ranged from under €5 a month to about €27 a month, or from about €125 a year. Providers are not named. Treat those figures as a map, not a quote.
A worked EXAMPLE, labelled as an example: a five-page site uses a .mt domain at NIC(Malta)'s official €20 in year one and €10 each year after. Hosting is entered as €150 a year, with email and SSL included. Year one is €170. Years two and three are €160 each. The three-year total is €490. That sits beside the website build, which starts from €990 with Malta Digital.
Type your own numbers. Empty boxes use the EXAMPLE defaults below. The .mt domain defaults are official NIC(Malta) fees, checked 8 November 2026. Hosting and extras defaults are examples, not quotes. Everything is worked out on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere.
This comparer needs JavaScript. By hand: year 1 = first-year domain + hosting + email + extras. Years 2 and 3 use the renewal domain fee instead. Add the three years together.
Use the official domain fees if you register a .mt name directly with NIC. Use the hosting number from the quote in front of you. If email or backups are extra, add them so the three-year total is honest.
Types of hosting

Shared hosting means many websites sit on one server. It can be fine for a light brochure site. A busy neighbour can also slow your pages.
Managed hosting means someone handles updates, the SSL padlock and help when something breaks. It usually costs more. It often suits a shop or a site that takes bookings.
A cloud server or VPS gives you your own slice of a machine. You get more room to grow. You also need someone who can look after it, or you pay a partner to do that.
| Type | What it means | Often suits |
|---|---|---|
| Shared | Your site shares a server with other sites | A simple brochure site with light traffic |
| Managed | A partner handles updates, SSL and help when it breaks | Shops, booking sites and busy enquiry sites |
| Cloud or VPS | You get your own slice of a server and more control | A site that has outgrown shared hosting |
We do not rank hosts on this page, and we do not invent claims about data centres in Malta. Ask each provider where the servers are, in which country, and what happens when you leave.
Tell us what the site must do. We will include hosting set-up, SSL and the running costs in writing, with the package that fits.
Speed, uptime and Google

A page that loads late loses people. So does a page that jumps while they try to tap a button.
Google Search Central, which we opened on 8 November 2026, sets three Core Web Vitals. Largest Contentful Paint should happen within 2.5 seconds. That is how quickly the main content appears. Interaction to Next Paint should stay under 200 milliseconds. That is how quickly the page reacts to a tap. Cumulative Layout Shift should stay under 0.1, so the layout does not jump.
Google says these measures, with other page-experience checks, align with what its ranking systems seek to reward. Useful content still matters most. Hosting that is down, or very slow in Malta and Gozo, still costs you the enquiry.
Where your data is stored

If your site collects a name, email or phone number, you are handling personal data. The Information and Data Protection Commissioner is Malta's data protection authority.
IDPC guidance, which we opened on 8 November 2026, explains the two main roles. A controller decides what data is collected and why. A processor handles data on the controller's instructions. Your business is usually the controller. The host is often a processor for stored files, databases and backups.
Sending personal data to a country outside the EU or EEA can be an international transfer. IDPC sets out three tests, including that another organisation abroad can access the data. Transfers can still happen. They need a proper basis, such as an adequacy decision or standard contractual clauses.
You do not need to become a lawyer to buy hosting. You do need a clear answer to a simple question: in which country do the website and its backups live? “The cloud” is not an answer.
What to ask, and how we set it up

A low first invoice can hide a higher year-two price, paid backups, or a domain you do not own. Ask the questions in the figure, and keep the answers with the quote.
The domain and the hosting are separate purchases. NIC(Malta) is the registry for .mt names. Its FAQ, which we opened on 8 November 2026, says NIC does not offer DNS, web or email hosting. Those must come from a third-party provider.
If you register directly with NIC, the published fees are €20 for a new .mt, .com.mt or .net.mt in the first year, then €10 a year or €18 for two years. An .org.mt is €15 in the first year and €5 a year after that. That is version 4.1, dated 1 August 2025, re-checked today. NIC shows those fees inclusive of 18% VAT.
From 28 August 2026, NIC also asks Handle holders to verify a contact number, in line with the NIS2 Directive. That is a domain-account step, not hosting, but it is part of keeping your Malta address in good order.
| Domain | First year (set-up + fee) | Renewal, 1 year | Renewal, 2 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| yourname.mt | €20 | €10 | €18 |
| yourname.com.mt | €20 | €10 | €18 |
| yourname.net.mt | €20 | €10 | €18 |
| yourname.org.mt | €15 | €5 | €9 |
Malta Digital's web design in Malta packages include hosting set-up. Professional Website starts from €990, Business Website from €2,490 and Growth Website from €4,900. The yearly hosting subscription and the domain are written into your scope, so year two is clear.
We set the server, the SSL padlock, backups and the domain records so the site stays reachable. We do not lock the domain in our name. You should be able to export the files if you ever move.
Proof
A fast, reliable website is what turns visits into orders and bookings. It is also what paid ads send people to.
Malta Digital's e-commerce advertising work includes a tracked period from 1 January to 28 May 2026: €95,470.88 spent across 41 campaigns, €573,222.05 in tracked sales, and a ROAS of 6.00. Names are hidden. Those sales still needed pages that loaded and checkouts that worked. A host that drops the site mid-campaign wastes the spend.

A few straight answers
Website hosting is the server that stores your pages and sends them when someone visits. It is not the same as the domain name, and it is not the design of the site. Malta Digital builds the website and sets hosting so customers can enquire, book or buy.
Hosting prices published on Malta pages we opened on 8 November 2026 ranged from under €5 a month to about €27 a month, or from about €125 a year. Providers are not named. Add the domain and any separate email or backup fees, then look at three years, not one invoice. Use the comparer on this page with your own quotes.
No. NIC(Malta) says it does not offer DNS, web or email hosting. Those services must come from a third-party provider. A .mt or .com.mt registered directly with NIC costs €20 in the first year and €10 a year after that, on fees we re-checked on 8 November 2026.
If your site collects names or emails, you decide why that data is used. The Information and Data Protection Commissioner explains controller and processor roles, and when sending data outside the EU or EEA counts as an international transfer. Ask your host for the country of the server and of the backups, and get it in writing.
Yes, because visitors feel speed and downtime. Google Search Central says site owners should aim for LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds and CLS under 0.1. Those page-experience signals sit alongside useful content. A down or very slow host still loses enquiries even if the design is good.
Our website packages include hosting set-up. The yearly hosting subscription is listed in writing in your scope, so year two is not a surprise. Websites start from €990, €2,490 and €4,900. Domains and hosting subscriptions are separate running costs.
A website builder is software that lets you edit pages, often with hosting bundled in. Hosting is the server itself. You can use a builder, or a custom site on separate hosting. What matters is that you own the domain, can export the files, and can move if you need to.
Copy the files and database to the new host first, test on a temporary address, then change the domain nameservers or DNS records. Keep the old host for a day or two as a rollback. Our website launch checklist covers SSL, DNS and the first checks after you point the domain.
