Facebook Video Ads: Lengths, Shapes and Malta Tips

Facebook video ads
that fit every placement.

Facebook video ads work best as short vertical edits with the offer in the first seconds. Meta allows long videos in Feed, but Facebook Stories only play up to 15 seconds in full. Malta Digital plans and runs video ads for Malta businesses inside Meta ads management, from €1,249 a month plus ad spend.

Short answer

Make one short shoot, then cut a 4:5 edit for Feed and a 9:16 edit of 15 seconds or less for Stories and Reels. Keep text out of the bottom 35% of vertical video. Malta Digital does this as part of Meta ads management in Malta. For budgets, see Facebook ads cost in Malta.

Key takeaways

  • How long should a Facebook video ad be? Meta allows up to 241 minutes in Facebook Feed. For Stories, keep it to 15 seconds or less so it plays in full. Most Malta businesses do well with a 15-second cut plus a longer Feed version.
  • What size should a Facebook video ad be? Meta recommends 4:5 at 1440 x 1800 pixels for Facebook Feed and 9:16 at 1440 x 2560 pixels for Facebook Stories. Files can be up to 4 GB in MP4 or MOV.
  • Do Facebook video ads cost more than image ads? No. Meta charges for the ad spend you set, whatever the format. The cost per lead or sale depends on your offer, audience and creative.

Why it matters

Why video earns its place in a Malta ad account.

Most people in Malta already scroll social media every day. In 2025, 82.4% of people aged 16 to 74 in Malta used social networks, against 67.3% across the EU (Eurostat isoc_ci_ac_i (social networks, 2025), opened 7 Nov 2026). Reach is easy here. Attention is the hard part.

Bar chart: 82.4% of people in Malta on social networks vs 67.3% in the EU (2025); 60.4% of Malta firms pay for online ads vs 32.6% in the EU (2024)
Original figure · Malta Digital, from Eurostat isoc_ci_ac_i and isoc_cismt, opened 7 Nov 2026. Almost everyone is reachable, and twice as many local firms compete for the same feed.

Example sceneA Valletta restaurant posts a 40-second landscape clip of its kitchen. People scroll past before the dish appears. Next week it posts a 12-second vertical cut. The plate lands in the first second, the terrace at sunset follows, and a “Book a table” button closes it. Same footage, a different edit. This is an example, not a client result.

Feeds are also busy with other local advertisers. In 2024, 60.4% of Malta firms with 10 or more staff paid to advertise online. The EU figure was 32.6% (Eurostat isoc_cismt (paid online ads, 2024), opened 7 Nov 2026). A short video that shows your place, your product or your team is one of the few things that stops the thumb.

This guide covers what Meta allows for video, how to plan one shoot that fits every placement, and how to judge the result. It is written for owners who pay for Meta ads in Malta and want video that brings enquiries, not just views.

Most owners find that one 30-second video only fits part of the plan. That is normal. The fix is a second, shorter edit, not a second shoot.

The table below copies the limits from Meta Business Help: Video length specifications across placements and the shapes from Meta Ads Guide: Facebook Feed video, Meta Ads Guide: Facebook Stories video and Meta Ads Guide: Instagram Feed video, all opened 7 Nov 2026.

Two rules matter most. First, Facebook Stories play videos of 15 seconds or less in full. Longer ones are split into cards, and people must tap to see the rest. Second, Meta asks you to keep roughly the top 14%, the bottom 35% and 6% of each side free of text and logos. On a 1440 x 2560 frame, that is about 202 pixels at the top and 896 at the bottom.

Every placement takes files up to 4 GB, in MP4 or MOV. Meta recommends captions and sound but does not require them.

Shoot plan

A one-morning shoot plan for Malta businesses.

You do not need a film crew. A recent phone, a clean lens and good light will do. Shoot vertical, at 9:16, and leave space around the subject so a 4:5 crop still works.

Five-step shoot plan: write 3 hooks, film vertical, cut a 15-second Stories edit, cut a 4:5 Feed edit, captions and safe zone
Original figure · Malta Digital. One morning of filming covers Feed, Stories and Reels when you plan the edits first.

Seconds 0 to 3: the hook. Show the result first. The finished kitchen, the plate leaving the pass, the view from the boat. Do not open with a logo.

Seconds 3 to 10: the proof. One or two real moments. A customer’s hands on the product, the clinic room, the team at work. Real beats stock every time.

Seconds 10 to 15: the offer and the next step. Say what it costs or what happens next, then show the button. “Book a table for Friday” beats “Learn more”.

Shoot in the morning or late afternoon. Malta’s midday sun gives hard shadows and squinting faces from May to October. Indoors, face a window. Record a few lines in English, and test a Maltese line for local, warm audiences. Add captions, because many people watch with the sound off on a bus or at work.

Proof

Proof: judge video by the result line.

Views are not the goal. Enquiries and sales are. Here is the kind of result line any campaign should be judged by. This lead campaign ran on a €6.00 daily ad set budget and brought 478 form leads at €9.68 each. It was not a video-only test. We show it because the same yardstick applies to every format.

Leads are enquiries, not sales. Your close rate decides whether a cost per lead is cheap or dear. When we test video against images, we compare cost per lead or cost per sale, never views alone.

Objective

Pick the right goal for video ads.

Meta lets you choose a goal for each campaign. For most Malta businesses the right goal is Leads or Sales, with video as the ad format. Meta then shows the video to people likely to enquire or buy.

Comparison: Leads or Sales goal with video as the format versus a video views goal used only to build a retargeting pool
Original figure · Malta Digital. Use Leads or Sales for the main campaign. Use video views only to build a pool of viewers.

A video views goal has one good use. It builds a pool of people who watched, so you can show them a direct offer later. It is cheap reach, but it rarely pays the bills on its own.

Give any new video campaign time to learn. Meta says an ad set usually leaves the learning phase after about 50 results in the week after its last big edit (Meta Business Help: About the learning phase, opened 7 Nov 2026). Swapping videos every two days resets that clock. See Facebook ads objectives for each goal in plain words.

Mistakes

Video ad mistakes we fix most often.

A landscape TV advert. On a phone it shrinks to a strip. Re-cut it to 4:5 and 9:16.

Before and after: common video ad mistakes such as logo intros and hidden text versus the fix with the offer first and a 9:16 edit
Original figure · Malta Digital. Five mistakes we see most, and the fix for each.

A five-second logo intro. People scroll away before anything happens. Lead with the result.

Text in the bottom third of a Story. Meta’s buttons and the caption cover it. Keep it in the safe zone.

One edit for every placement. A 60-second video gets cut into cards in Stories. Make a short version.

Judging after two days. The account is still learning. Read the result after a full week.

Costs

What video ads cost to run.

Meta does not charge extra for video. You pay for the ad spend you set, the same as for an image. Your results depend on your offer, your audience and the creative.

Cost stack for video ads: ad spend paid to Meta, footage, management from €1,249 a month, video creation in Growth Partner from €3,449 a month
Original figure · Malta Digital. Video ads cost the same to run as image ads. The extra work is in the footage and the edits.

Example only: a budget of €15 a day for 30 days is €450 of ad spend for the month. That is simple maths, not a forecast. Our Facebook ads budget planner works out a budget from the results you need.

Malta Digital’s Meta ads management starts from €1,249 a month plus ad spend. Our Growth Partner package, from €3,449 a month, includes video content creation. The ad account stays in your name. See Facebook ads cost in Malta for how spend and fees sit side by side.
