Ad creative in Malta
Sizes and safe zones, hooks, formats, examples, testing and creative fatigue.
Facebook & Instagram ads · Carousel
A Facebook carousel ad shows 2 to 10 swipeable cards in one ad, each with its own image, headline and link. It works best when the cards tell one short story that ends on your offer. Malta Digital plans and runs carousel ads for Malta businesses as part of Meta ads management, from €1,249 a month plus ad spend.

Use a carousel when you have more than one thing to show: a range, steps, or a before and after. Keep each card to one idea, make card 1 the hook and the last card the offer, and give every card its own link. Malta Digital builds and runs them as a Meta ads agency in Malta. For budgets, see Facebook ads cost in Malta.
Why it matters
Picture a homeware shop in Mosta. It has one ad with one photo of one lamp. People who want a lamp may click. People who want a rug, a mirror or a vase scroll past, because they never see them.
A carousel fixes that. One ad holds up to 10 cards, and each card can open its own page. The shopper who swipes to the mirror lands on the mirror. That is why carousels suit shops, menus, rooms, trips and services with clear steps.
The audience is already there. In 2025, 82.4% of people aged 16 to 74 in Malta used social networks, against 67.3% across the EU (Eurostat isoc_ci_ac_i (social networks, 2025), opened 7 Nov 2026). And 62.5% of the same age group bought something online in the last three months (Eurostat isoc_ec_ib20 (online purchases, 2025), opened 7 Nov 2026). People here scroll and buy. A carousel lets them browse before they click.

This guide is for owners who pay for Facebook ads in Malta and want more enquiries and sales from the same budget. You will see what Meta allows, how to plan the cards, and how to judge the result.
Meta specs, checked today
Meta publishes the carousel rules in its Ads Guide. We opened both pages on 7 Nov 2026 (Meta Ads Guide: carousel in Facebook Feed and Meta Ads Guide: carousel in Instagram Feed). The table shows what matters when you brief a designer.
| Setting | Facebook Feed | Instagram Feed |
|---|---|---|
| Number of cards | 2 to 10 | 2 to 10 |
| Recommended shape | 1:1 square | 4:5 for image-only carousels; 1:1 if any card is a video |
| Resolution | At least 1080 × 1080 px | At least 1080 × 1080 px |
| Primary text | About 80 characters | About 125 characters |
| Headline / description | About 20 / 18 characters | Not listed for this placement |
| Image file | JPG or PNG, up to 30 MB | JPG or PNG, up to 30 MB |
| Video card | MP4, MOV or GIF, up to 4 GB, 1 second to 240 minutes | MP4, MOV or GIF, up to 4 GB, 1 second to 2 minutes |
| Landing page | Required | Required |
Text numbers are recommendations, not hard limits. Longer lines still run, but phones cut them off. Then the offer hides behind “See more”. The shape rules matter more. A 4:5 card in a 1:1 slot gets cropped, and the price at the bottom can vanish.

Type your primary text and the headline for each card. The planner checks every line against Meta’s numbers for the placement you pick. It also reminds you of the story order. Use it before you brief a designer, so nobody designs a card twice.
Pick the placement and how many cards. Type your primary text and each card’s headline. The planner checks every line against Meta’s text recommendations and the story order. Nothing leaves this page.

Story patterns
A carousel is a short story told in swipes. Meta’s own advice is to use every part of the card, from image to headline to button, to tell that story (Meta Business Help: best practices for carousel ads, opened 7 Nov 2026). These six patterns cover most Malta businesses.

The range. One product or service per card, each linking to its own page. This is the classic shop carousel. How it works. Step 1, 2 and 3 on separate cards, ending on the booking card. Clinics and gyms use this well.
Before and after. The problem on card 1 and the finished job on card 2. Builders, cleaners and salons get the most from it. One product, many angles. Detail, size, use and price, one per card. Good for a sofa or a bike.
Rooms, dishes, trips. Swipe through the choice like a menu. Answer the doubts. Price, time, place and guarantee, one doubt per card. Service firms with longer sales use it to cut back-and-forth.
Example sceneA Gozo boat-trip operator runs a four-card carousel in June. Card 1 is the first jump into clear water. Card 2 is the deck and the lunch. Card 3 shows the meeting point in Mġarr with the time. Card 4 is the price and a “Book your seat” button. Each card opens the booking page for that trip. This is an example, not a client result.
Worked example
Carousels make reporting richer, because Meta shows clicks per card. That tells you which product or message people want. Use it, but judge the ad on sales or enquiries, not swipes.

Example only. Say a shop spends €15 a day for 30 days. That is €450 of ad spend for the month. If Meta tracks €1,800 in sales from the carousel, the ROAS (return on ad spend) is 4.0. If card 3 gets half of all card clicks, that product deserves its own ad next month.
Two warnings. Tracked sales value is not profit, so check it against your margin. Our guide to what a good ROAS is shows how. And do not cut a card after three days. Give the ad a week or more, then compare.
Proof
Carousels are one format inside a bigger account. The yardstick is the same for every format: ad spend in, tracked sales out. From 1 January to 28 May 2026, an online store we ran ads for spent €95,470.88 on Facebook and Instagram. Meta tracked 9,085 website purchases worth €573,222.05, an average ROAS of 6.00.

This was not a carousel-only test, and results vary. We show it because it is how we judge every carousel we build: by tracked sales or enquiries, never by likes.

Ads Manager steps
Start in Ads Manager with the goal. For most Malta businesses that is Sales (purchases on your website) or Leads (forms, chats or calls). Then pick the audience and placements, and at ad level choose the carousel format.

Add 2 to 10 cards. Each needs an image or video, a headline, a description and a link. Meta then offers options such as showing the best performing cards first, adding an end card with your Page picture, or a map card with your nearest store (Meta Business Help: best practices for carousel ads). Turn on “best cards first” for a range. Turn it off when the order is the story, such as steps or before and after.
Link each card to the page that matches it. Meta’s advice is the same: a blouse card should open the blouses page, not the home page. If you have a small range, one page with all products is fine. Before you publish, preview the ad in Feed and Stories on a phone.
What we fix
Most weak carousels fail for the same few reasons. The good news is that each one is quick to fix.

The biggest one is random photos from five different shoots. Meta advises images that feel like one set, and so do customers. The second is every card going to the home page. People then have to search for the thing they tapped. The third is a logo on card 1. Nobody swipes for a logo.
Last, many carousels run without tracking. Without the Meta Pixel and Conversions API, Meta cannot see which card led to a sale. It then shows the ad to people who swipe, not people who buy. People who swiped but did not buy are a perfect audience for retargeting ads.
Costs
Carousel ads cost the same to run as any other format. You set the ad spend and pay Meta directly. Meta does not charge more for more cards. What changes is the work: more images, more lines of copy and more links to check.

Malta Digital’s Meta ads management starts from €1,249 a month plus ad spend. That covers strategy, campaign setup, tracking review, ad copy and static creative, testing and clear reports. A few straight answers
Between 2 and 10 cards. Meta’s Ads Guide lists this for both Facebook Feed and Instagram Feed. Three to five cards is enough for most stories.
Meta recommends 1:1 square at least 1080 × 1080 pixels for Facebook Feed. For Instagram Feed, image-only carousels can use 4:5; carousels with any video card use 1:1.
For Facebook Feed, Meta recommends about 20 characters for the headline and 18 for the description, plus about 80 for the primary text. Longer text still runs but may be cut off on phones.
No. Meta charges for the ad spend you set, whatever the format. The cost per sale or lead depends on your offer, audience, creative and tracking.
Yes. Each card has its own link. Meta recommends linking each card to the matching product or service page, or to one page with all products if your range is small.
Turn it on for a range of products, so the most clicked cards move forward. Turn it off when the order tells the story, such as steps or before and after.
Yes. Cards can be MP4, MOV or GIF up to 4 GB. In Instagram Feed, video cards can run from 1 second to 2 minutes, and carousels with video use the 1:1 shape.
