Facebook & Instagram ads · Black Friday and Christmas
Black Friday falls on Friday 27 November 2026 and Cyber Monday on 30 November. For Facebook and Instagram ads in Malta, that means choosing your offer and checking your prices in early November, warming up your audience from mid-November, and having the sale ads approved and scheduled before the weekend, then carrying on into Christmas gifting. Any “was/now” price in your ads must show the lowest price you charged in the 30 days before the reduction, under Malta’s Price Indication Regulations. This plan from Malta Digital covers the timeline, the price rule, offers, audiences and the mistakes that cost sale weekends.

Black Friday is on Friday 27 November 2026 and Cyber Monday on 30 November. Malta Digital plans Meta ads so the offer and prices are set in early November, audiences warm up from mid-November and sale ads are approved and scheduled before the weekend. Under Malta’s Price Indication Regulations, a “was” price must be the lowest price charged in the previous 30 days.
The short answer
Start earlier than feels necessary. The sale weekend itself is short, from Friday 27 to Monday 30 November in 2026, and the businesses that do well are usually the ones whose ads, prices, tracking and stock were sorted out weeks before. Ads that are uploaded on the Thursday night and still waiting for review on Friday morning lose the busiest hours.
In practice we work back from the dates. The offer and the prices are decided by the first week of November. From around the middle of the month the ads build interest and audiences: people who watched your videos, visited your website, messaged you or joined an early-access list. The sale ads are uploaded and scheduled a few days before the weekend, and the Christmas ads are ready to follow on 1 December.
Christmas then runs on its own rhythm in Malta. The feast of the Immaculate Conception on Tuesday 8 December and Republic Day on Sunday 13 December are public holidays, and many people do their Christmas shopping and bookings around them. Gift vouchers, last-minute services and restaurant bookings carry on almost to Christmas Eve, long after the cut-off for posting physical gifts has passed.
| When | Stage | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Now to about 9 Nov | Prepare | Choose the offer, check your 30-day prior prices, test tracking, make the creative |
| About 9 to 22 Nov | Warm up | Run content and early-access ads, grow your WhatsApp or email list and your audiences |
| 23 to 26 Nov | Launch | Upload and schedule the sale ads at least a day early so they clear review |
| Fri 27 to Mon 30 Nov | Sale weekend | Black Friday to Cyber Monday: retarget, watch stock and delivery, avoid big edits |
| 1 to about 20 Dec | Christmas gifting | Gift ideas, vouchers, delivery cut-offs; plan around 8 and 13 December |
| Last days before 25 Dec | Last minute | Gift vouchers, click and collect, services and bookings |
| January | After Christmas | January sales, with the prior-price rule checked again |
Costs
Meta’s ad auction is a competition for people’s attention. In the weeks around Black Friday and Christmas, many more businesses advertise to the same people at the same time, so the cost of reaching them, the CPM, tends to rise. There is no published figure for how much it rises in Malta, and anyone quoting one is guessing, but you should expect to pay more for each impression than in a quiet month.
That does not make November a bad month to advertise. People are also more ready to buy, so a well-prepared campaign can bring sales at a good cost per purchase even with higher CPMs. What changes is that weak ads and slow websites get punished faster. The cost per result, not the CPM, is the number to judge, as our guide to Facebook ads metrics explains.
The practical consequence is about budget. Decide in advance how much you can spend over the sale weekend and the Christmas period, and what the most is that a sale can cost you. Our Facebook ads calculator works out your break-even point from your own margin. If you only sell enough to cover the ads at full price, a deep discount on top of higher ad costs can mean losing money on every order.
The price rule
Since 2022 Malta’s Price Indication Regulations, which come from the EU’s Omnibus Directive, say that when you announce a price reduction you must show the prior price, and that the prior price is the lowest price you charged for that product in at least the 30 days before the reduction. Earlier promotions in those 30 days count. If the product has been on sale for less than 30 days, the prior price is the lowest price you charged before the sale. If the discount grows during a sale, the prior price stays the one from before the first reduction.
For Facebook and Instagram ads this matters in two places: the ad itself, if it says “was €80, now €60” or “30% off”, and the product page the ad links to. Both have to be right. Raising a price in early November and then “reducing” it on Black Friday is exactly what the rule is meant to stop, and the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority deals with complaints about prices. A Black Friday catalogue ad that pulls “sale” prices from your website shows whatever the website says, so the website prices are what you need to check.
The easiest way to stay safe is to check your prices for the last 30 days before you plan the discounts, and to prefer offers that are not price reductions at all, such as a gift with purchase, a bundle or free delivery. This is practical guidance, not legal advice; if you are unsure about a product, ask a lawyer or the MCCAA before the ads go live.

Offers
The deepest discount is not the only way to win Black Friday, and for many Maltese businesses it is the worst. Competing on price against international online stores is hard, and customers who only came for the discount rarely come back. Offers that protect your margin often work just as well in ads: a bundle of products that go together, a free gift above a basket size, free delivery including Gozo, early access for people who signed up, or a limited Christmas edition.
Service businesses can join in too. Salons, gyms, restaurants, clinics and experience providers sell gift vouchers, which are a natural Christmas present and bring in cash in December for work done in January and February. A voucher ad with a clear price, a simple way to buy and a nicely designed voucher that arrives by email or WhatsApp is one of the easiest Christmas campaigns to run.
Whatever the offer, say it in the first line and show it in the image. People scroll fast in November, and an ad that makes them work out what the deal is gets skipped. If there is a deadline, it must be real.
Proof
From 1 January to 28 May 2026, an online store we ran ads for spent €95,470.88 on Facebook and Instagram. Meta Ads Manager tracked 9,085 website purchases worth €573,222.05, an average ROAS of 6.00.

Audiences
The people most likely to buy on Black Friday are the ones who already know you. That is why the weeks before the sale matter. From around the middle of November, run ads that are worth watching or reading on their own: new products, short videos of your shop or service, gift ideas. Everyone who watches, visits your website or messages you becomes part of an audience you can reach again during the sale.
An early-access list works well in Malta, where many customers prefer WhatsApp to email. Ask people to message you or fill in a short form to get the offer before everyone else, then send it to them first on the Friday. Your existing customers are the warmest audience of all; if you have their consent, a customer list in Ads Manager lets you show them the sale, or leave them out of ads for new customers.
During the sale, retarget people who visited a product or added to cart and did not buy, and exclude people who already bought, so you do not pay to show the same offer to someone who has it. In a small market, these retargeting audiences fill up quickly, so keep their budgets modest and change the ads during the weekend as the offer moves from “starts Friday” to “last day”.
Launch week
Uploading too late. Meta says most ads are reviewed within 24 hours, but some take longer, and editing an ad’s text, images, link or targeting sends it back to review. Upload the sale ads a few days early with a scheduled start time. Changes to budget, bid or schedule do not trigger a new review, so plan the ads so that on the weekend you only need to change budgets.
Changing too much. Every new ad set and every significant edit restarts Meta’s learning phase, which Meta says usually ends after about 50 results in the week after the last significant edit. A brand new ad set launched on Friday morning has little time to settle before Monday. It is often better to add the sale ads to campaigns that have been running steadily in November, and raise their budgets on the day.
Broken basics. The ads cannot fix a checkout that fails, a product that is out of stock or a website that slows down when traffic arrives. Test a real purchase on a phone the week before, check the Meta pixel and Conversions API record it with the right value, make sure the stock and prices in your catalogue match the website, and put your delivery times and Christmas cut-off dates for Malta and Gozo where people can see them.

Not a shop?
Black Friday is mostly a retail habit, but the weeks around it are just as useful for businesses that do not sell products online. Restaurants take Christmas lunch, office party and New Year bookings in November and early December, so their ads should be about booking a date before the good ones go; our guide to Facebook ads for restaurants covers the booking side.
Gyms, studios and personal trainers often do better saving their biggest push for January, when people make new year plans, and using December for gift vouchers and early sign-ups at a set price. Clinics and salons can sell treatment vouchers as presents, as long as the ad follows Meta’s rules for health and beauty. Our guide to Facebook ads for gyms explains the January season.
For lead-based businesses, such as trades or B2B services, the end of the year is often quieter, and that can be a good time to keep a modest budget running while competitors pause. Fewer business advertisers in some audiences can mean steady leads for the first weeks of January.
How we do it
For each client we start with the numbers: margins, stock, the offer and what a customer can cost. Then we check prices and tracking, build the warm-up and sale ads in good time, schedule them and agree in advance how budgets move over the weekend. During the sale we watch the account every day, and after Christmas the client gets a report of spend, purchases or leads and cost per result, straight from Ads Manager.
Meta ads management from Malta Digital starts from €1,249 a month plus ad spend, excluding VAT. We do not compete on being the cheapest agency, and we would rather tell you honestly that a deep discount will not pay than run it for you. If you want ads ready for this year’s sale weekend, apply now so there is time to prepare.
